When Summer Meets Fall in San Diego

Spend one day soaking up what's left of summer along the coast, then trade your sandals for something a little more fall-friendly and head to Julian for the day. Two seasons. One vacation.
Start With a San Diego Beach Day
If summer isn't ready to leave San Diego yet, there's really no reason to rush it. Spend a morning at Mission Beach, walk or bike the boardwalk through Pacific Beach, explore the coastline in La Jolla, or settle in somewhere along Mission Bay for a slower afternoon by the water. September can be an especially nice time to enjoy the coast. Julian is especially famous for its apples, and fall is when apple season begins to take center stage. Orchards around the area offer seasonal activities, although U-pick availability depends on the year's harvest—so if apple picking is high on your list, make sure to check with individual orchards before making plans. You can still get plenty of fall without picking a single apple. Julian Farm & Orchard's seasonal Harvest Fest begins in September, bringing pumpkin-patch energy and farm activities to the start of the season.
And then, obviously, there's the pie. A trip to Julian without apple pie feels almost wrong. Stop by one of the town's classics, like Julian Pie Company or Mom's Pie House, grab a slice, add some cider, and fully commit to the fact that you drove into the mountains specifically to pretend San Diego has seasons. We support it. Take your time exploring, enjoy the cooler mountain scenery, and maybe bring a whole pie back with you. Then head west again.
